IMLAY - The Imlay Volunteer Fire Department's Street Dance came of age this year. The fire department held its 21st street dance on July 14, and the annual fundraiser was well attended.

"I don't know how many people were there, but there were a lot," IVFD Chief Jerry Monroe said.

Events of the day got off to a slow start as folks preferred the shade in the 102-degree weather. The fire department's beverage counter, the snow cone table and the kiddie wading pools were big hits during the heat of the day. In addition, some of the attendees played bingo in the shade.

As the temperature began to drop, the horseshoe tournament began. The pot of $35 was taken by the team of Tom Rector and Joe St. Pierre, who also won the tournament last year.

"It's more about the bragging rights," Rector said.

Karaoke was a hit for young and old. Melodies of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" to songs from Def Leppard were performed by American Idol hopefuls.

The real hit of the day was the band brought in by the IVFD. Hired Gunnz, who plays mainly in the Reno-Carson area, is beginning to get a following in Pershing County. The band's lead vocal and bass player Rod Burt said that the band played at the Lovelock Fireman's Ball most recently and that was where they made contact with the IVFD.

Burt, along with Adam Brannon on lead guitar and vocals and Ken Urrea on drums, rocked the dance. They were enjoyed so much that the audience wouldn't let them leave until they had played two encores. The Hired Gunnz website is www.hiredgunnz.com.

"Everyone mentioned how much they liked the band, so we've already got them booked for next year," Monroe said.

The IVFD made a little over $800 at this year's street dance.

"This was our best year so far," Monroe said.

He said that the money will be put into their general fund to get Thanksgiving dinners and help out the community wherever they can.

Monroe cited the band for keeping people at the dance longer and a special resident, Karen Bard, for selling over 400 raffle tickets as two sources making this the best fundraiser for the IVFD.

Imlay Auxiliary Secretary Terry Sherbinow echoed Monroe's claims of this year being a good fundraiser. The auxiliary provides the food and some activities for the event. Sherbinow stated that the auxiliary made approximately $500 on the event and that a portion of that would be donated back to the IVFD.
