The Imlay Auxiliary held its annual Easter Egg hunt at the Imlay baseball field, April 19. Auxiliary members hid over 350 eggs for around 20 children, for what will be the last function of the Imlay Auxiliary.
"We started this (Imlay Auxiliary) eight years ago as a way to support our volunteer fire department and give back to our community," said auxiliary secretary Sandy Urschel.
Urschel was one of the founding members still with the Imlay Auxiliary. She said she has many great memories of the events, but will especially miss the Father's Day parade.
"I loved the Father's Day parade and I am really going to miss it. I love parades and to have the parade in town was fun. Afterwards we had a barbecue and the opportunity to socialize with our community. I just love our community spirit," Urschel said.
For Imlay Auxiliary President Terry Sherbinow, the Easter egg hunt was her favorite event.
"My number one was the Easter Egg hunt. I'm worse than the kids. I like seeing all their smiling faces," Sherbinow said.
The Imlay Auxiliary started the Easter Egg hunt four years ago. They said they had no plans for it to get as big as the Unionville Easter Egg hunt once was, but that they wanted area children to have a fun time and not put the pressure on parents to have to drive to Winnemucca or Lovelock.
"I really hope someone picks it (Easter Egg hunt) up. The kids have such a fun time," Sherbinow said.
Sherbinow said that another Imlay resident had expressed interest in starting the Easter celebration back up in the Unionville park.
Imlay Auxiliary vice-president Jessica Castillo said her favorite event was the Imlay Murder Mystery Dinner.
"I loved the murder mystery dinner. I loved all of our experiences, but I think that was my favorite," Castillo said.
Castillo started volunteering with auxiliary events about five years ago. She had such a good time that she joined the auxiliary in 2011.
Other events the five-member Imlay Auxiliary was involved in include Mother's Day flower bouquets, running the food concession at the Imlay Street Dance, Imlay Chili Cook Off and the Imlay Service Appreciation Ceremony. They ran numerous other fundraisers for individual reasons throughout their eight years of service to their community.
"I'm sad we're breaking up, but right now everyone needs a break from the stress," Castillo said.
Castillo is expecting her third child in June and Sherbinow and Urschel are new grandparents who say they want to spend more time with their grandchildren.
Sherbinow and Urschel say they are hoping others will step up and continue some of the events that the community has enjoyed.
Imlay resident Brenda Pinkston confirmed that she and her husband Virgil are trying to organize a hunt in Unionville next year. Pinkston asked anyone interested in helping to call her at 304-3159.
"We started the auxiliary eight years ago to help the fire department with the Street Dance and to give back to this great community that we love so much. But now it is time for someone else to take the reins," Urschel said.
Urschel and Sherbinow are refocusing their energy to starting a Mommy & Me play and learning time for preschool children in the Imlay area.
"Most towns have a preschool in their public school system, but ours is too small, but we have a lot of preschoolers so we thought we would just start one on our own," Sherbinow said.
They have already organized their lesson plans and have started a playtime for one hour a week at the Imlay Baptist Church. The sessions are open to all preschool aged children and a parent. There is no cost to attend. Parents will alternate bringing snacks and a book for story time. For more information on attending the Mommy & Me playtime contact Sherbinow at 304-5659 or Urschel at 200-2030.
