Humboldt Volunteer Hospice recognizes volunteers and invites others to join

WINNEMUCCA - April 21-27 is National Volunteer Week and one local organization is acknowledging they couldn't do what they do without their small army of do-gooders.

"We would like to thank all of our volunteers for the dedication they bring to our organization," said Humboldt Volunteer Hospice Director Sherry Smith.

Smith said the volunteers are the backbone of HVH and of its Frugal Flamingo Thrift Shop.

"I honestly don't know what we would do without our volunteer family," said Smith. "They truly are the legs of this organization."

Smith said the Humboldt Volunteer Hospice is always looking for more men, women and youth who are willing to donate their time and their talents to a worthy cause.

"Volunteering with our organization takes a big heart," said Smith. "We need physical and emotional commitment. We need people who really want to share their special gifts to help others."

The Humboldt Volunteer Hospice provides help to individuals in the Humboldt County community who are suffering from a chronic, debilitating or terminal illness. All hospice care is provided at no cost to patients and families do not need a doctor's referral in order to access hospice services.

Smith said volunteers are needed to provide hospice care to patients as well as to work at the Frugal Flamingo, located at 720 E. Fourth St.

Hospice volunteer opportunities might include providing hands-on care for patients; helping patients locate needed services; assisting with fundraising events; reading to, listening to or acting as a companion to patients; performing light household duties, handyman duties or running errands; and assisting with shopping and/or meal preparation.

Volunteers in the Frugal Flamingo help organize, sort, hang and price donated items.

All volunteers receive training and each sets his or her own time limits.

"Even if you are not comfortable going into a home and being involved one-on-one with a patient," said Smith, "there are so many other ways you can help our program grow and thrive in the community."

"Everyone is welcome," she continued. "We can find a place for every volunteer."
