Humboldt Volunteer Hospice invites residents to donate time, talents

WINNEMUCCA - The Humboldt Volunteer Hospice is looking for people who are willing to donate their time and their talents to a worthy cause.

"Volunteering with our organization takes a big heart," said Executive Director Sherry Smith. "We need physical and emotional commitment. We need people who really want to share their special gifts to help others."

The Humboldt Volunteer Hospice provides help to individuals in the Humboldt County community who are suffering from a chronic, debilitating or terminal illness. All hospice care is provided at no cost to patients and families do not need a doctor's referral in order to access hospice services.

Smith said volunteers are needed to provide hospice care to patients as well as to work at the Frugal Flamingo, the organization's thrift shop located at 720 E. Fourth St.

Terra Webber began volunteering with the Frugal Flamingo in January 2011. Store Manager Margaret Aranguena said she appreciates Webber sharing her "fashion sense" with regard to decorating displays at the store.

For Webber's part, she says giving of her time and talents brings good things to her life. "It's personally a very rewarding experience in helping with an important cause for my community," she said.

Smith said men and women, youth and adults, are invited to become part of the Humboldt Volunteer Hospice Care Team.

Hospice volunteer opportunities might include providing hands-on care for patients; helping patients locate needed services; assisting with fundraising events; reading to, listening to or acting as a companion to patients; performing light household duties, handyman duties or running errands; and assisting with shopping and/or meal preparation.

Volunteers in the Frugal Flamingo help organize, sort, hang and price donated items.

All volunteers receive training and each sets his or her own time limits.

"Even if you are not comfortable going into a home and being involved one-on-one with a patient," said Smith, "there are so many other ways you can help our program grow and thrive in the community."

"Everyone is welcome," she continued. "We can find a place for every volunteer."
