WINNEMUCCA - The Humboldt Volunteer Hospice is expressing its appreciation to a local group of young hog wranglers.
The Humboldt County High School Rodeo Club recently presented the nonprofit organization with a check for $468.07-half their winnings from the 2013 Pig Wrestling Contest at the Tri-County Fair & Stampede.
This year's pig wrestling event took place on Friday, Aug. 30. According to Michelle Urain, Winnemucca Convention and Visitors Authority Marketing and Sales Coordinator, the purpose of the event is to provide a way for the fair and its attendees to give back to our local community.
Urain said all proceeds from the event go to local non-profit organizations chosen by the first and second place teams in each category.
"We know the rodeo club had a choice of who they wanted to share their proceeds with," said Humboldt Volunteer Hospice Executive Director Sherry Smith, "so we are even more grateful that they chose to share some of their bounty with us."
In order to secure their winnings, rodeo club members had to race against the clock while trying to put a pig in a barrel. If that isn't enough, team members also had to run through the mud to catch the pig!
"It's such a fun event," said Smith, "but it also involves a lot of hard work and mud! We are just very thankful to these fine youth for keeping our cause at the top of their list."
The Humboldt Volunteer Hospice honors and supports individuals in the Humboldt County community who are suffering from a chronic, debilitating or terminal illness. All hospice care is provided at no cost to patients. Families do not need a doctor's referral in order to access hospice services.
