WINNEMUCCA - When you're a nonprofit organization, your life revolves around money, says Sherry Smith.
"It's every day, it's in the back of your mind, it's trying to figure out where the next donation is going to come from," explained the executive director of the Humboldt Volunteer Hospice.
Thanks to the generosity of Newmont Mining Corporation's employees, though, Smith says those daily financial assessments are much less worrisome.
"The Legacy Fund has made all the difference for us," said Smith. "It is a great blessing each quarter to know that we're going to have that help."
The Newmont Mining Corporation Legacy Fund is an employee-driven donation program that funds numerous community organizations on a quarterly basis.
Newmont officials have said they established the NMC Legacy Fund to create a more strategic and long-term community investment program. Employees can give directly to local nonprofits that address existing social service needs or to an endowment fund that will help sustain communities after mining operations cease. Newmont matches these donations dollar-for-dollar.
In 2011 alone, Newmont Nevada's employees pledged approximately $650,000 to the fund. Newmont then matched employee contributions, bringing the total charitable donation to $1.3 million.
"We would like to thank Newmont and its dedicated employees for their help," said Smith. "We are truly grateful for this money; it makes a substantial and important difference for the residents of Humboldt County."
The Humboldt Volunteer Hospice honors and supports individuals in the Humboldt County community who are suffering from a chronic, debilitating or terminal illness. All hospice care is provided at no cost to patients. Families do not need a doctor's referral in order to access hospice services.

The nonprofit also operates the Frugal Flamingo Thrift Shop, located at 720 E. Fourth St. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
