WINNEMUCCA - Two local entities have joined forces to ensure that every Humboldt County foster child has a merry Christmas.
Humboldt Printers and Humboldt General Hospital are once again sponsoring the Abundant Tree Gift Giving Program in coordination with the State of Nevada Division of Child and Family Services.
This year, the two organizations hope to see a steady outpouring of support from the community in order to provide Christmas for every foster child.
Nicole Maher, the director of community education and development for the hospital, said HGH has been searching for a way to help the community outside of the medical environment.
"Our staff members have asked many times about opportunities in the community to help as a group," said Maher, "and when I ran across this opportunity with Humboldt Printers, I knew it was a good fit."
Charmae Keener said she felt the same way. "Nicole and I both felt that Humboldt General would be a great partner in every aspect of this gift-giving program."
Abundant Trees will be located at Humboldt Printers and Humboldt General Hospital beginning Monday, Nov. 19. Each will contain a variety of "ornament" tags with information specific to each child.
Because the gifts collected will likely be the only ones received by the foster children, Keener said the group asks that individuals try to fill all the gifts specified on the tag.
For those who don't wish to purchase individual gifts, there are also tags which simply ask for a gift certificate from a local merchant.
"We have a way for everyone to help, regardless of their time or financial considerations," she said, adding, "We also encourage teamwork. It's a wonderful thing as an office or a family to get together and help one of these children."
Keener even suggested that offices use the Abundant Tree Gift Giving Program rather than exchanging gifts amongst themselves.
Gift givers are asked to leave their name and contact information when picking up tags. Gifts should be dropped off at Humboldt Printers, located at 405 W. Fourth St., no later than 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10.
Gifts should be unwrapped with tags attached.
Keener said volunteers from the community will make sure the gifts are wrapped and delivered to foster children by mid-December.
