HUMBOLDT HOSPICE LOOKING TO MATCH VOLUNTEERS WITH REWARDING OPPORTUNITY

WINNEMUCCA - With kids heading back to school, hospice officials say now is a perfect time for people to donate their time and their talents to a very rewarding cause.

"We are looking for volunteers with a big, big heart," said Executive Director Sherry Smith. "We need physical and emotional commitment. We need people who really want to share their special gifts to help others."

The Humboldt Volunteer Hospice provides help to individuals in the Humboldt County community who are suffering from a chronic, debilitating or terminal illness. All hospice care is provided at no cost to patients and families do not need a doctor's referral in order to access hospice services.

"It is our goal to have a volunteer matched up for each client that is in the hospice program," said Smith. "As a volunteer, you can bring a spark into someone's life."

Smith added, "Even if you're not comfortable going into a home and being involved one-on-one with a client, there are so many other ways in which you can help our program to grow and thrive in our community. "

Smith said hospice volunteers work together as a "care team," meeting the emotional, spiritual, and medical needs of patients and their families.

Volunteers provide hands-on-care for patients, help network services, assist with fundraising events, read to, listen to, and are a companion to patients.

Volunteers may also provide support to families, deliver equipment, perform light housework, shopping and transportation duties, and help with meal preparation.

"As a volunteer, you will receive training for the work you will perform," said Smith, noting that volunteers have the right to say to no to requests that he or she cannot perform. "A volunteer can set his or her limits and availability."

Volunteers are also needed in the Frugal Flamingo Thrift Shop to help organize, sort, hang and price donated items.

"Everyone is welcome," said Smith. "Hospice is a very rewarding place to donate your time. We encourage our local residents to give us a few hours and we'll fill their hearts with gratitude for a very meaningful opportunity."
