WINNEMUCCA - Humboldt General Hospital has been caring for northern Nevada's mothers and their newborns for more than 100 years.
Over the past century, the hospital has been served by different physicians and nurses, different hospital administrators and staff, but the quality of care has remained, says HGH OB Nurse Manager Linda Goodale.
"That's the one constant at Humboldt General Hospital. This department has always been a special place for our moms and babies."
Last October during a reorganization of Humboldt General Hospital's Nurse Management Team, Goodale was named a hospital-wide House Supervisor; in May, she accepted a promotion as OB Nurse Manager. It's a familiar place for the Winnemucca native; during her 30 years at Humboldt General Hospital, 22 years have been spent in Labor and Delivery.
Goodale said the choice to accept the promotion was an easy one.
"I agreed to the advancement because I believe in the combined abilities of local physicians and staff members to provide every mother with an exceptional care experience," she said.
"Sure we have changes from time to time, one physician leaves and another one comes, but our mission is about 'being helpful and caring for those in need,' and I believe we have done and continue to do a great job keeping that goal in our line of site."
Dr. Richard Ingle, a longtime local family practice/obstetric physician, recently moved his practice to Washington. Goodale said that move spurred some rumors about the vulnerability of HGH's OB Department.
"Any rumors about us not being able to deliver babies in a completely safe and medically secure environment are untrue," said Goodale. "We are totally equipped and ready to serve this community's OB needs."
Drs. Bradford Granath and Sharon McIntyre, both family practice/obstetric physicians, continue to serve the community for both vaginal and caesarean births. The hospital also offers 24-hour epidural coverage.
All staff members are certified in neo-natal resuscitation and the hospital's helipad is open 24 hours for emergency transport, if needed.
Perhaps the best reason Goodale can give why women should choose to deliver locally, however, is the very personalized care they receive.
"That is our best asset," she said. "Every birth is a special experience - a once-in-a-lifetime chance for us to help families create some beautiful memories."
