Humboldt General Hospital unveils 12-week plan for optimal health

WINNEMUCCA - Do you have 12 hours over the next 12 weeks to devote to your health?

Humboldt General Hospital Wellness Coordinator Melissa House is hoping the answer to that question will be a resounding "Yes!" for the residents of Humboldt County.

The hospital recently introduced a 12-week plan for optimal health entitled, "New You!"

The program, "The 12 Lessons of Wellness & Weight Loss," is sponsored as part of the hospital's "Healthy You" wellness brand.

Beginning this Thursday, Jan. 12, participants - both men and women - will meet for one hour each week to discuss different wellness- or weight loss-related topics.

Participants also will be invited to take part in a 12-week weight loss challenge.

"This is meant to be a fresh start, a new beginning," said House, who will present the program. "There is so much information in the media - much of it false - about how to attain a healthy weight and manage a healthy lifestyle."

She continued, "We just want to take people back to the basics, to what really helps our bodies operate at their peak performance. We will provide good, solid information, and participants will also find a ready network of new friends who are looking to improve their health as well."

The course will run through March 29. Participants may choose to attend instructional sessions each Thursday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. or from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The course will take place in the Sarah Winnemucca Conference Room at Humboldt General Hospital. There is no charge to attend.

Participants are encouraged to take part in the entire 12-week curriculum; however, House said residents should not refrain from participating if they can't attend each session. "Come when you can," she said. "Even a little bit of this information will be valuable to our overall health this year."

Weekly topics will include: Want to Lose Weight?; Don't Drink Your Calories; Start Your Day with Breakfast!; Be Carb Smart; Cook for a Better Weigh; Dine Out the Smart Weigh; Exercise to Lose and Control Weight; Feel Full on Fewer Calories; Lower Your Fat Intake; Portion Control; and Snack Smart!

The program will kick off with "Do You Need to Lose Weight?" on Thursday, Jan. 12.

All topics support the latest Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the federal government's evidence-based nutritional guidance to promote health, reduce the risk of chronic diseases and reduce the prevalence of overweight and obesity through improved nutrition and physical activity.

"Our goal is to help participants make better choices in their fast-paced lifestyles," said House. "Many are overwhelmed with large portions, refined carbohydrates and no education about the caloric density of foods."

She continued, "Still more do not exercise or realize the benefits of being more active. These lessons will instruct and motivate in a positive manner for better health and weight."

"The 12 Lessons of Wellness & Weight Loss" will kick off on Thursday, Jan. 12, in the Sarah Winnemucca Conference Room at Humboldt General Hospital.
