Humboldt General Hospital receives multiple awards from University of Nevada School of Medicine

WINNEMUCCA - The University of Nevada School of Medicine presented multiple awards to Humboldt General Hospital during the HGH board meeting on Nov. 15. Board Chairman Moe Hanzlik and CEO Jim Parrish accepted the awards on behalf of the hospital.

Dr. Elissa Palmer, department chair of family medicine in Las Vegas, presented a plaque from Gov. Brian Sandoval in proclamation that Nov. 17 is declared Rural Health Day. Palmer also displayed a plaque that would be presented to those preceptors or teachers who helped teach medical students in residence. That presentation was scheduled for a luncheon at 2:15 p.m. on Nov. 16. Palmer presented an additional plaque to HGH from UNSOM, thanking the staff for partnering with them in training the next generation of professionals.

Richelle O'Driscoll, UNSOM community relations, presented a certificate of commendation from Sen. Harry Reid in commemoration of National Rural Health Day for partnering with UNSOM in caring for the health of Nevadans in rural communities.

In other news from the Nov. 15 board meeting, HGH has made an offer of employment to a doctor in California. He was expected to make a decision by Nov. 18 as to whether he will be joining HGH.

Parrish presented financial information for the month of October. Total operating revenues exceeded 16 percent of the budgeted amount; operating expenses exceeded the budgeted amount by 7 percent; net income exceeded the budget amount by 203 percent; operating profit exceeded the budget by 3,722 percent and the fiscal year-to-date net income was 230 percent over budget.

As for the balance sheet, total assets were 17 percent higher than assets last year; liabilities are 7 percent over last year and net worth is 17 percent higher than last year's figure.

Parrish presented additional pricing comparisons for specific services as compared to other northern Nevada hospitals. Some of those services included a variety of injections, reagent strips for blood glucose, emergency room visits and ECG monitoring. The report reflects that pricing charged by HGH falls in the middle of those prices charged by other hospitals.

A proposal to purchase two Respironic V60 BIPAP machines used to treat sleep apnea was presented to the board. Board member Mary Orr was in attendance remotely by telephone and Shellie Cooney was absent. The board members considered present voted unanimously to purchase the units for a total of $24,890.

In a recent report by Press Ganey Associates, HGH was given a 7.7 mean score improvement for the emergency room operation.

Parrish presented to the board members the status of leased/rented medical office space contracts executed and returned. In an effort to generate a response from practitioners who had not responded, the board approved that the deadline for return of signed contracts would continue to Dec. 31 from the original Sept. 1 date and that the board would be included on further requests to practitioners to respond.

Parrish also informed the board members that HGH did not make the cut for NV Energy's most recent grant funds toward a solar project for the hospital. He said that they would apply for the next round of funding to occur in February or March 2012.
