WINNEMUCCA -Emergency services personnel from across the state are invited to Winnemucca next month to complete their continuing education requirements.
Humboldt General Hospital's Emergency Medical Services group will offer its "2013 Annual EMS Refresher" from Friday, Nov. 1, through Sunday, Nov. 3, at the East Hall of the Winnemucca Convention Center.
According to Capt. Ken Whittaker, HGH EMS Rescue Education Coordinator, this year's program will offer classroom and on-site instruction for a well-rounded student experience.
"We've offered this 24-hour refresher course since 2003," said Whittaker, "and each year we step it up even more to give our participants the best information possible as they move into the new year."
Whittaker said personnel from every aspect of emergency services are invited to attend, including representatives from the medical, fire, law enforcement and mining fields. "We've got something for everyone," he said.
This year's lineup covers everything from basic extrication and emergency obstetrics to the latest information about backboards and tactical medicine.
Participants will also enjoy a dinner lecture Friday on HGH EMS Rescue's alternative delivery model at the Burning Man counterculture festival, held each year in the Black Rock Desert.
Saturday, a panel discussion will cover the "Lessons Learned from the June 10, 2013, I-80 Incident."
Participants will also enjoy real-world rotations in Emergency Obstetrics, Burn Management, Airway Essentials and Basic Extrication; an Active Shooter application is also planned. Participants are reminded to dress for the terrain and the weather.
A Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals course will also be offered from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, November 2, at the convention center. Cost is $50 without books and $100 with books.
Courses will be taught by representatives from HGH EMS Rescue, Humboldt General Hospital and local law enforcement.
"Each year we are focused on making our annual refresher a place where EMS providers can access the most timely information and network with other EMS agencies from across the state," said Whittaker.
He added, "We are excited for this year's program and know that each participant will go away more prepared to help those in need."
Registration will take place at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, at the East Hall Winnemucca Convention Center.
Participants who pre-register for the conference by Friday, Oct. 21, pay only $150; those who register after Oct. 21 pay $200.
