WINNEMUCCA - Humboldt County's Chris Gleason is competing in the bull riding competition at the National Junior High Finals Rodeo taking place this week at Red Rock Park in Gallup, N.M.
Gleason recorded a no score in his first performance of bull riding on Tuesday morning. He was back in action on Thursday night but results were not available at press time.
Gleason earned a spot in the finals rodeo based on his season-long performance during the Nevada schedule.
The Humboldt County Junior High School Rodeo Club had a strong contingent at the state finals this year including Megan Miller (barrels, poles, team roping, goat tying and breakaway, Kenadee Miller (breakaway, poles and barrels) and Kerstin Christiansen (poles and goat tying).
Danyelle Brown (goats, breakaway roping and ribbon roping), Quint Bell (team roping, ribbon roping, calf roping, chute dogging), Dusty Robertson (goat tying, barrels, poles and breakaway) and Gleason (bulls) competed at the Nevada State Finals in Eureka on Saturday, May 24, and Sunday, May 25.
In the first performance, Bell finished fifth in breakaway roping with a time of 6.48 seconds. Robertson collected two top-10 outings in the second performance, including a ninth-place finish in goat tying at 13.94. She was 10th in girls breakaway roping, stopping the clock at 8.32.
In addition, Bell placed second in the second performance in boys breakaway roping with a time of 4.15. Bell added another second-place finish in the short go-around of boys breakaway roping in a time of 3.19.
Robertson netted a fourth-place finish in the short go-around of goat tying with a time of 12.13.
Jordan Taylor earned all-around cowboy honors in Nevada this year, while Shaylynne Reymore was the all-around cowgirl. Daniel Eary and Bailey Fullmer earned reserve cowboy and cowgirl honors, respectively. TJ Griener was named the rookie cowboy and Fullmer was the rookie cowgirl.
The 2013 state champions included girls goat tying (Reymore), boys goat tying (Taylor), girls breakaway (Fullmer), boys breakaway (Taylor), bull riding (Eary), barrels (Fullmer), pole bending (McKenzie Ryan), chute dogging (Eary), team roping (Dario Ceresola and Mackay Spyrow), ribbon roping (Taylor and Ryan) and .22 light rifle (Lacey Steele).
