WINNEMUCCA - Graduation for the participants of the Citizen's Academy was held on Nov. 17 at Chihuahua's Restaurant. Sheriff Ed Kilgore and Undersheriff Curtiss Kull were on hand to bestow certificates of completion to the participants as well as briefly speak to the group.

Kilgore told the group, "For me, it's very rewarding to be able to show people what we do for a living." He said that he thought that changes could be made in this small area that would affect the world by joining together and working on problems collectively. Kilgore stated to the group, "Without your support, law enforcement is a very, very difficult job." Kilgore thanked the graduates for their participation.

Kull said that law enforcement is a special job and that the academy gives the participants a snapshot and a little tidbit of the job. He added that the job could not be done without the public. Kull thanked the participants for being involved.

According to a sheriff's office press release, 17 members of the community have attended the second annual Humboldt County Sheriff's Office Citizens Academy over the last six weeks. This course was put on at the sheriff's office and instructed by numerous local law enforcement professionals.

Course topics included the history of the sheriff's office, sex offenders, specialty courts, coroner law, crime scene investigations, accident investigations and criminal law.

The purpose of the Citizens Academy was to provide some general instruction to persons on the functions of the legal system and law enforcement in general. Hopefully those that attended have a better grasp of the various disciplines and topics that law enforcement personnel need to be familiar with. As mentioned, this was the second academy and others will be planned for next year. Citizens Academy's have been put on by law enforcement and very popular with the public since the mid-80's.

Sheriff Kilgore would like to congratulate and thank the following individuals for their attendance: Jill Chatfield, Kevin Chatfield, Dustin Hatch, Kent Henderson, Bob Himmelreich, Tom Klein, Elizabeth Lawrence, Michelle Miller, Rendal Miller, Lee Morrell, Gary Orr, Jason Poor, Brandon Reed, Bennie Romo, Robert Shaw, John Siegfried and Jessica Tovar.
