How Will You Participate in Domestic Violence Awareness Month?

WINNEMUCCA - October brings Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Every 96 minutes a domestic violence assault is reported to police, with even more occurrences that go unreported each day. According to the National Institute on Justice, one in every four women will be abused by a partner in her lifetime. Even more startling, Nevada has the highest rate of domestic violence related homicides in four of the last five years.

In Honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, WDVS will be hosting a special event each week of October to increase public awareness of domestic violence and domestic violence related issues within the community. It's time to break the silence and end Domestic Violence.

On Oct. 5, WDVS will host the 5th Annual Candlelight Vigil honoring victims of domestic violence. The night will include dinner and a silent auction. Tickets can be purchased through the WDVS office for $30.

WDVS will host a FREE Confronting Domestic Violence with a Loved One Class Thursday, Oct. 11, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. This class will include detailed information on how to help a friend or family member facing domestic violence and is intended for any individual who is interested in supporting someone in their life who is facing domestic violence. A light dinner will be served and space is limited. To register, contact the WDVS office.

October 2 and 16, WDVS will be hosting a FREE Survivors' Support Group from 6-8pm. This support group is offered every first and third Tuesday of each month and is free to anyone interested. Support group is facilitated by a licensed professional. Child care is provided and no registration is necessary.

On Oct. 15, from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., WDVS will be hosting their bi-annual taco fundraiser. Stop by Las Margaritas to support WDVS. Purchase a $5 ticket and receive four tacos and a soft drink. Tickets can be purchased in advance by contacting the WDVS office or the night of.

WDVS will host a free parenting seminar, Thursday, Oct. 25, to help single parents who have been victims of domestic violence cope with the demands of parenting. This class will provide useful tools for managing the stresses of parenthood along with methods of safety planning with children who have domestic violence in their lives. A light dinner will be served and space is limited. To register, contact the WDVS office.
