WINNEMUCCA - Acts of violence occur every 18 seconds in this country, and 74 percent of Americans know someone who has been personally impacted by domestic violence.
Despite its prevalence, domestic violence and sexual assault remain some of the most underreported crimes in the country.
Abuse affects parents, siblings, coworkers, friends, and the whole community. A total of $5.8 billion is spent each year in the United States on domestic violence related health expenses, 33 percent of police time is spent responding to domestic violence calls, and 57 percent of communities in the US cite domestic violence as the leading cause of homelessness among women and children.
This isn't a family problem; it's a community problem that requires a community response. We need to stand together and break the silence.
We're asking you to break the silence. Send us an anonymous postcard and share with us how domestic violence has impacted you: as a sister, a friend, a father, a wife, a supervisor, a doctor, a neighbor, an advocate.
How has domestic violence impacted your life? Postcards will be displayed together in a powerful art display during our Voices of Survivors Exhibit at the annual WDVS Candlelight Vigil to be held Oct. 4. Postcards can be mailed to: 50 A Melarkey St., Winnemucca, NV 89445.
In the past, the WDVS Vigil has honored those who have lost their lives to domestic violence and worked to raise money for the direct services provided by Winnemucca Domestic Violence Services.
This year, our Wine and Dine Vigil will depict the heroic stories of survivors as well as honor those who have lost their lives to abuse.
This event is open to the public and tickets are available by contacting the WDVS office.
