Housing permits up in 2011 over 2010

In February of this year, the city issued four permits for single-family homes with a total construction value of $473,627. In January, two permits for single-family homes were issued with a construction value of $288,626.

In Humboldt County, there were 39 mobile home private property permits issued in 2011, up from the 30 issued in 2010. There were seven permits for single-family dwellings in 2011, the same number as 2010.

Through March 20 of this year, the county has issued four mobile home private property permits. Those permits are issued for mobile homes going up on private lots in the county.

The total number of permits issued by the county, which can include everything from wiring and plumbing to garage additions to new roofs, is up slightly from the same period last year. County building officials issued 127 permits through March 20, about 26 more than the same time last year, when 101 permits were issued.

The total construction valuation of those permits is slightly lower than last year. Total value through March 20 was $813,853 versus $854,992 during the same period last year. The county has collected $25,425 in fees for permits this year, up from $17,234 in 2011.

Karen Johnson, permit technician for the county, said permit volume has been pretty steady for the past couple of years. The last time permit numbers really fell was during a depressed period in the mining industry around 2003.

"The bottom kind of dropped out then," she said.

The city of Winnemucca also is trending up over last year in the total number of permits issued. Through February, 52 permits have been issued versus 43 during the same period. The total construction valuation through February was $952,600. Last year's figure during the same period was $1,108,611.

For 2011, the construction value for all permits issued by the city of Winnemucca totaled $15,738,115, which was up substantially from the 2010 amount of $5,182,321. The city issued a total of 393 permits in 2011, which was down from 472 issued in 2010.

The total construction valuation of all permits issued by the county in 2011 was $13,650,336, down slightly from $15,088,006 in 2010. The total number of permits was about even, with 635 permits issued in 2011 and 650 in 2010.

The county collected $185,012 in building permit fees in 2011, down slightly from the $198,103 in permit fees collected in 2010.
