Hospital Auxiliary nursing scholarship applications are now available

Attention nursing students: applications are now being accepted for one of Humboldt County's most long-standing and successful scholarship programs.

The Humboldt Hospital Auxiliary awards $28,000 in scholarship money each year through its Nursing Scholarship Program-a program that has helped Winnemucca combat the nursing shortages experienced by many of the nation's hospitals.

The Humboldt Hospital Auxiliary began its nursing scholarship program more than 25 years ago. The idea was the brainchild of Marie Thompson, a charter member of the Humboldt Hospital Auxiliary and a registered nurse herself, who said she simply acted on a tongue-in-cheek comment from then-hospital board chairman Dan DeBonis.

"We asked him what we could do to help the hospital most," she said of the Auxiliary, "and he said, 'Get us some nurses.'"

Thompson took DeBonis at his word and within a short time she had spearheaded the nursing scholarship committee.

When the program began, Thompson said there wasn't a high degree of interest; the Auxiliary was initially giving out one or two scholarships a year.

That has certainly changed, however, and the group is currently funding eight scholarships.

Applications for the 2014 Humboldt Hospital Auxiliary Nursing Scholarship Program are available at the front desk of Humboldt General Hospital, located at 118 E. Haskell Street, or at the Poke & Peek Thrift Shop, located at 3200 Bengochea Circle.

Information is also available by calling nursing scholarship committee member Alicia Cramer at (775) 621-5202.

Applicants must have a letter of acceptance from an accredited nursing school before they can apply. Deadline for application is Aug. 15, 2014.
