Hospice invites community to light Christmas tree in memory of loved ones

Area residents are invited to light up Christmas with memories of their loved ones.

Humboldt Volunteer Hospice will sponsor the fourth annual "Lasting Lights of Love" Memorial Christmas Tree Lighting Service on Friday, Dec. 5, on the main floor of the Humboldt County Courthouse.

This year's indoor ceremony came about through the generosity of Humboldt County and the Public Employees Association.

Hospice Executive Director Sherry Smith said the new location will not only ensure everyone's warmth and protection from inclement weather, but it will also help participants focus wholly on loved ones who have passed on.

"This is a time for joy and happiness," said Smith of the holidays, "but it's also a time for peaceful reflection and remembering."

Smith continued, "This will be a beautiful tree and a touching ceremony that will help us feel joy while we reflect on the memory of our loved ones."

For a suggested $20 per light donation, Smith said a light will be displayed in honor of each loved one. The names of all loved ones will be read; the tree lighting will follow.

After, community residents are invited to enjoy caroling in the courthouse foyer.

"This is going to be a special ceremony but also a fun evening," said Smith. "We invite everyone to come and share in the lighting of Humboldt County's Memorial Christmas Tree."
