Humboldt Volunteer Hospice is feeling very thankful toward one of America's largest and most historical companies.
May 23, HVH Executive Director Sherry Smith received a check for $4,000 from the Union Pacific Foundation during a brief ceremony in Reno.
This is the seventh year in a row the foundation has donated money toward the local nonprofit-money that has covered everything from administrative costs to training expenses to patient supplies, including the cost of pain medications that patients and their families can't afford, but which are necessary to help comfort patients during their final days and hours.
This year's windfall will pay for much-needed computer and technology upgrades.
"When we receive a check like this," said Smith, "we are just ecstatic. We can't thank the Union Pacific Foundation enough for giving us a hand up."
Union Pacific Foundation notified Smith of the award last February. The notification letter spoke of Union Pacific's "long-standing commitment to improve the quality of life in the communities we serve and where our employees live and work."
The company noted that its vision is for UP employees to take pride in their company's civic leadership and that customers and shareholders will appreciate and recognize Union Pacific as an excellent corporate citizen.
Smith said she already knows Union Pacific is an excellent corporate citizen.
"I sincerely believe that Union Pacific cares about the communities they're in and we are excited that they share our vision for improving the quality of life in our community and partnering with us to make that vision a reality."
The mission of the Humboldt Volunteer Hospice is to honor and support individuals in the Humboldt County community who suffer from a chronic, debilitating or terminal illness.
