WINNEMUCCA - A residence on Pavilion Street suffered slight smoke damage Monday when a pilot light on a water heater ignited a bug bomb the resident had placed nearby, according to Alan Olsen, chief of the Winnemucca Volunteer Fire Department.
Olsen said the call mid-morning came in as a possible structure fire. When firemen arrived, there was some smoke visible but no flames. Two engines and 16 firemen responded to the call.
He said the bug bomb was placed too close to the water heater and "flashed." The resident was able to knock the fire down with a garden hose, but there was some slight smoke damage.
The fire department was on the scene for about 45 minutes, Olsen said, and helped evacuate the smoke from the residence.
Olsen said the incident serves as a reminder for residents to use caution and always read the label on bug bombs and chemicals before using them. Some indicate the material is flammable and should not be used near flames such as pilot lights.
