Holiday gift ideas for your outdoor enthusiast

Time is running and you still can't figure out what to get that special angler, hunter or outdoor enthusiast for the holidays? If you are still searching for the perfect gift for your sportsman, the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) has some ideas that might help.

Nevada Dream Tags

With Nevada Dream Tags, the hunter(s) in your life will have a unique "raffle" opportunity to win premier big game tags. The winners will experience hunting one of five species (elk, California bighorn sheep, desert bighorn sheep, antelope and mule deer) in any area during the entire hunting season (weapon class and weapon season still apply). The tag is similar to other western states' raffle tags, super tags and super raffles.

Give your hunter a shot at the hunt of a lifetime. Purchase a $10 Resource Enhancement Stamp and $5 Dream Tag Raffle tickets this holiday season. You can purchase Dream Tag tickets at www.nvdreamtag.org.

Conserve Wildlife license plate

It's not very often that people are presented with a "win-win" scenario. The Conserve Wildlife license plate provides an opportunity for everyone in the Silver State to directly contribute to wildlife education programs and provide volunteer opportunities for all Nevadans while also sporting the most attractive license plate in Nevada.

Wildlife Education programs include Trout in the Classroom and Project Wild as well as wildlife education sites and interpretive nature trails throughout Nevada - reaching over 18,000 children each year.

NDOW's volunteer program PrOWL (Preserving Our Wildlife Legacy) was created to allow opportunities for all Nevadans to directly participate in preserving our wildlife legacy for future generations with projects that include habitat restoration, wildlife conservation and more.

To learn more about ordering a Conserve Wildlife license plate, check out the Charitable & Collegiate Plates section of the Nevada DMV website.

Wildlife Water Development Atlas (Guzzler Book)

The Guzzler Book is a valuable tool for all wildlife enthusiasts, sportsmen and women. Witness Nevada's wildlife in the wild. From big game like deer, bighorn sheep and antelope to upland game like chukar, sage grouse and rabbits, all use these water developments.

The Wildlife Water Development Atlas includes:

• 160 full color, detailed map pages covering the entire State of Nevada

• Each map drawn at 1:144,000 scale, providing remarkable detail

• Land management status information and UTM coordinates for GPS

The books are on sale for $50 at any NDOW office or go to http://www.ndow.org/Nevada_Wildlife/Guzzler_Information/ for a downloadable order form.

The Apprentice License

The Apprentice Hunter License, introduced in 2011, allows anyone 12 and older to hunt upland game and waterfowl (no tagged species) for one season without first completing a Hunter Education Course. The apprentice must have never previously held a hunting license and must always be accompanied and closely supervised by a mentor 18 or older who holds a valid Nevada hunting license and is willing to assume legal responsibility for the apprentice hunter. After one season those apprentices who want to continue hunting must successfully complete their Hunter Education course requirement - which in Nevada applies to anyone born after Jan. 1, 1960 - before purchasing another hunting license.

The license is free, but with mandatory habitat conservation and license agent fees ($4) and applicable stamps (state upland and/or state and federal duck); the cost will be $14 for upland game, $29 for waterfowl or $39 for both. The Apprentice License is currently only available at NDOW regional offices statewide. You can find the forms for the license on the NDOW website at ndow.org.[[In-content Ad]]
