Hoenck, Harper win state high school rodeo titles in Fallon SSIR to begin in Winnemucca next week

Bobby Hoenck will be headed to Rock Springs, Wyo., for the national finals in three events. He won the overall state championships in cutting behind a strong performance at the state finals. Hoenck used two second-place finishes in the state finals in the bareback to advance to the national finals. In addition, Hoenck was fourth in the year-end standings in the steer wrestling and seventh in the saddle bronc.

Competitors that finish first through fourth in the year-long standings move on to the national finals, to be held July 15 - 21. Those that place fifth through 15th advance to the Silver State International Rodeo, which takes place July 2 - 7 at the Winnemucca Events Complex. In previous years, it was the fifth through 10th-place finishers.

Sam Harper took home the state saddle bronc championship, as Humboldt County had four members finish in the top five. Cole Stremler was second and Cole Hatcher placed fourth and earned a spot in the national finals. Clay Stremler finished fifth, advancing to Silver State. Harper also earned a spot at the national finals with a fourth-place finish in the bull riding.

Jeffery Anderson will be able to perform in front of his home crowd in the bull riding, as he placed 11th in the state standings. In addition, Cole Stremler and Josh Dufurrena were 14th in team roping.

Josh Harrer, who rides as an independent, qualified for the national finals along with Hank Filippini, as the duo finished third in the team roping. Harrer also finished 14th in tie-down roping and will be in Winnemucca for the Silver State International Rodeo.

On the girls side, DeeAnna Pasquale was one spot out of the transfer spot for nationals in cutting, as she finished fifth. Pasquale will be busy at the Silver State International Rodeo, as she qualified for three more events as well. The Lowry High School graduate was ninth in barrel racing, 12th in pole bending and 13th in breakaway roping.

Savannah Montero qualified for three events in the Silver State International Rodeo as well. She was sixth in goat tying, eighth in pole bending and ninth in cutting. Sharon Sherburn was eighth in cutting and also qualified for the Silver State International Rodeo.

In addition, at the state finals, Shaynee Monchamp was crowned the Nevada High School 2012 Rodeo Queen and will participate in the national contest in Wyoming.

The Silver State International Rodeo begins next Monday at 7 a.m. with the first performance of cutting. The rodeo runs through July 7 at the Winnemucca Events Complex.
