WINNEMUCCA - The quest for a second consecutive state championship in the shot put for Ian Hinkey got a step closer, as he took home the top spot in the event at last weekend's Northern 1A regional championships in Fallon.
Hinkey, a senior, had a toss of 44 feet, 1 inch, to easily outdistance Eureka's Dakota Howard, who was second at 42-11.75. Hinkey's biggest challenge will come from the Southern 1A, as Spring Mountain's Joseph Henry won the event in the south with a throw of 45-08.75, nearly seven feet ahead of second place. Hinkey's best throw this year is 45-03. In addition, Hinkey placed seventh in the discus with a throw of 107-02.
Frankie Hill qualified for the state championships in four different events. The senior was second in both the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles, with times of 17.87 and 44.11, respectively. Sierra Lutheran's Conner Love won both events. Montell Russum of Spring Mountain was the Southern 1A champion in both hurdle races. Hill placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 38 feet and fourth in the discus, with a throw of 115-01.
Freshman Hawk Urban, competing in his first regional championship, was ninth in the discus at 96-07 and 13th in the shot put with a toss of 31-03.25.
