WINNEMUCCA - McDermitt High School's Frankie Hill and Ian Hinkey have picked up from where they left off from last year's state tournament, with impressive performances at the Crane Ranchers Invitational on Friday, April 20, in Crane, Ore.

Hinkey, the defending 1A state champion in the shot put, won the event in Crane with a throw of 44 feet, 4 inches. In addition, the senior was ninth in the discus with a toss of 105-02. His throw in the shot put was a personal best.

"He had some good throws throughout the day and got warmed up and made that last throw," said MHS head coach Richard Egan. "He really wants to get back to state and win another state championship."

Hill, who was second in the 300-meter hurdles in the state championships last year, won with a time of 43.71 and was third in the 110-meter hurdles at 18.76. He picked up a second third-place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 36-09. The senior also competed in the javelin and was 15th with a throw of 105-0.

"He is right there in all of his events," Egan said. "He said he is looking to take about another second off in the 300 hurdles, which is a big jump. He is looking to run the 400 meters as well but we're looking at if the discus would be better than the 400."

Senior Jared Smith finished ninth in the shot put with a toss of 87-09, was 14th in the 800 meters in a time of 3:21.49 and was 18th in the discus at 87-09.

Freshman Hawk Urban placed 13th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:51.49 and was 20th in the discus at 84-04. In addition, he placed 22nd in the shot put with a throw of 29-10.50 and was 23rd in the javelin at 84-03.

"Jared is starting to get up there and throwing further," Egan said. "I am not sure if we can get him into state. Looking at the other kids it gets tight, and you will probably have to throw 39 feet."

As a team, McDermitt and Lakeview (Ore.) tied for ninth with 32 points each. Jordan Valley (Ore.) won the team title with 99 points, while Burns (Ore.) was second at 92.5.

Senior Elizabeth Jones led the Lady Bulldogs with a sixth-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 29-10. The senior was 18th in the discus at 69-01 and 20th in the javelin with a throw of 64-03.

"She was our only girl up in Crane," Egan said. "She had a personal best in the discus but her strength is the shot out. With the way she is improving, she should be competitive at the regional and have a chance at making it to state."

The Lady Bulldogs were 14th in the team standings with three points. Vale (Ore.) led the way with 221.50 points and Grant Union (Ore.) was second at 80.

McDermitt travels to Idaho this Saturday at 9 a.m. for the Horseshoe Bend Invitational.

"It will be a good meet for us with some strong teams," Egan said. "We have two weeks before the regional and look to just keep improving."
