A program aimed at helping people "live well" with diabetes is now accepting participants for the third and fourth quarters.
Humboldt General Hospital's Dietary and Nutrition Services Department will host its "Living Well with Diabetes" education program in July from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesdays, starting July 9 and ending Aug.13, and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Thursdays, starting July 24 and ending Aug. 28.
In October, class session will take place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays, starting Oct. 7 and ending Nov. 11, and from 10 a.m. to noon Thursdays, starting Oct. 16 and ending Nov. 20.
The 6-week, comprehensive education program covers topics such as disease risks, monitoring blood sugar, creating meal plans, remaining active, managing medications and more.
Those who are interested in the "Living Well with Diabetes" education program should obtain a referral from their primary physician.
According to HGH Dietary and Nutrition Services Director Tiffani Nalivka, diabetes education is a collaborative process in which people with or at risk for diabetes gain the knowledge and skills they need to modify their behavior for maximum health.
"Living with a chronic condition can be very challenging," said Nalivka, "so our goal is to help people create a self-management plan that will help them truly live well."
Instruction is delivered to diabetes patients on a one-and-one and small-group basis. The program is covered by most insurance; for those who don't have insurance, the hospital may be able to provide financial assistance.
For more information, please contact Tiffani Nalivka at (775) 623-5222, ext. 1756, or email at nalivkat@hghospital.ws. Participants are encouraged to register early as class space is limited.[[In-content Ad]]
