HGH EMS will mark 'EMS Week' with community celebration

Local emergency personnel will host a community celebration this weekend in honor of National EMS Week.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week, which is scheduled for May 18-24, honors the lifesaving care that EMS providers offer nationwide, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Locally, Humboldt General Hospital's Emergency Medical Services Rescue department will mark the week by hosting an "EMS Open House" at the ambulance station.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 17, community residents are invited to stop by for free hot dogs, free goodies, and tours of the station and emergency vehicles. Emergency personnel will offer free blood pressure checks and training for compression only CPR.

Additionally, kids can get fitted for a bicycle helmet and take part in a bicycle safety course, weather permitting. Children should bring their bicycles to the event.

The local celebration will center on the 3 R's that describe EMS: Ready, Responsive and Reliable.

HGH EMS Rescue Professional Services Officer Fergus Laughridge said EMS is ready because emergency services are available anywhere and anytime. EMS is responsive to all kinds of medical emergencies despite weather conditions or hazards. "And EMS is reliable, serving the public with well-trained professionals," he said.

Nationally, EMS Week is sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Locally, EMS Week celebrations are sponsored by Humboldt General Hospital.
