Everyone age 6 months and older should get a flu shot. But how about getting a flu shot in the comfort of your own home?
Humboldt General Hospital Emergency Medical Services Rescue will be offering in-home flu shots to Humboldt County residents beginning Oct. 1, until supplies are gone.
Morning, afternoon and evening appointments are available. Cost is $25, payable by cash or check.
The Centers for Disease Control recommends that everyone 6 months and older get vaccinated against the flu every year. This year's flu vaccine protects against three influenza viruses that will be most common during the upcoming season including the influenza B, influenza A (H1N1), and influenza A (H3N2) viruses.
"This is one way to shield yourself and your loved ones this flu season," said HGH EMS Rescue Director Pat Songer, who spearheaded the original idea for door-to-door service.
"Our goal is to protect our community and this is the easiest, most comfortable way we know how to do that."
Songer asked that local residents call HGH EMS Rescue Community Paramedicine Coordinator Debbie Whittaker at (775) 623-5222, ext. 1363 to schedule their in-home flu shot. This will allow local crews to ensure they have enough vaccine for the community.
Once administered, the vaccine will take approximately two weeks to protect against prevalent flu strains.
"Our recommendation follows that of the Centers for Disease Control," said Songer. "We absolutely recommend that everyone from 6 months and older get a flu shot."
Songer continued, "Flu can cause serious illness and even death and this is one simple shot that can provide protection throughout the coming flu season."
