HGH, Community Coalition to offer six-week education course for diabetics

WINNEMUCCA - Humboldt General Hospital and the Frontier Community Coalition have joined forces to help local diabetics better manage their health.

Together, the organizations will host "Let's Talk Diabetes," a six-week course aimed at providing participants with a process by which they can plan changes in their decision-making and behaviors with regard to diabetes.

"For some participants, those changes are going to be very dramatic," said HGH Wellness Coordinator Melissa House, who will facilitate the six-week program along with Frontier Community Coalition Director Sunny Johnson.

"For others, this class will provide a starting point for beginning that change process."

"Let's Talk Diabetes" will kick off at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, in the Sierra Conference Room at Humboldt General Hospital. The class will continue each Wednesday thereafter until Wednesday, Dec. 14. Each class will last two hours; there is no charge to attend.

House said the course will feel different to participants than other sessions or support groups they may have attended in the past.

"We've designed this class to be fun, interactive, engaging and full of learning," she said. "Our goal is to create a non-threatening environment in which participants can learn from the materials presented, from one another and from the facilitator."

Topics will cover the basics of managing diabetes including healthy eating, monitoring blood glucose, the natural course of diabetes, medicine options, insulin issues, long-term complications, caring for gestational diabetes and more.

"Our goal will be to engage our group members in an open discussion about their diabetes," said House. "Plus, there will be plenty of time for participants to ask questions about what they are most interested in learning."

House said the ultimate goal for participants will be to help them create an action plan for change.

"We want to help everyone evaluate their decisions and behaviors with regard to diabetes," she said. "Ultimately, we want to eliminate negative decisions and behaviors and help participants become better self-managers of their diabetes."
