WINNEMUCCA - Lowry High School's Fernando Herrera was one of four northern Nevada wrestlers to win individual titles at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Saturday at the Reno Events Center.
Herrera earned All-American honors with his 2-1 win over Caleb Green of Bartlett High School (Anchorage, Alaska). Green was called for locking hands twice in the final minute, giving up the two points to Herrera. The senior is the defending 3A state champion in the heavyweight division.
Jace Billingsley also earned All-American honors as he placed third at 160 pounds. The senior beat Ryder Newman of Green Valley (Las Vegas) 11-3 in the third-place match.
Michael Billingsley finished fourth at 170 pounds, as he lost in overtime. Cody Andersen (225) was sixth.
As a team, Lowry finished seventh out of 92 teams with 126.5 points. The only Nevada team ahead of them was Green Valley in sixth with 129.5 points. Poway (Calif.) won the team title with 270.5 points, and Union (Tulsa, Okla.) was second at 211.5. Easton (Pa.), Roseburg (Ore.) and Pleasant Valley (Brodheadsville, Pa.) rounded out the top five with 152, 148 and 135 points, respectively.
Lowry travels to Lovelock on Wednesday for the Pershing County Duals at 4 p.m.
