Help Young Life students attend camp

Nine high school students are trying to raise money to go to Young Life camp this summer and need help from the community to reach their goal.

Several events are planned to help the students make the trip to Woodleaf, Calif., for the week-long Young Life camp. Each year, over 100,000 students worldwide attend Young Life camps, according to the group's leader Lori Timko.

Timko said the camp involves high adventure with lots of fun activities, speakers and sports.

"It's like a retreat," she said. "They have lots of fun."

Some of the activities include canoeing, zip-lining, stand up paddle boarding, volleyball and swimming. The camp is from July 12-18 and the cost for each student is $640.

To raise the necessary funds to attend, the students are hosting several fundraisers:

• Nature's Baker Fig Bars will be on sale at Bella Grazia or by calling Timko. The cost is $2 a bar or $24 a box.

• A car wash and detail will be held on May 3, 10 and 24 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost will be donation-based.

• The Young Life group is hosting a yard sale on May 31 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 3400 Moon Lane. The group is currently accepting donations for items to sell.

• Young Life students are offering babysitting services to parents in the community who need a night out or just want to run errands kid-free. To arrange for a babysitter, call Timko.

• Young Life students are mowing lawns, cleaning windows and pulling weeds to raise money. To arrange for those services, call Timko.

• Young Life is hosting a 50/50 raffle and tickets will be available at each event and also at Bella Grazia. The winner will be pulled at the community Fourth of July event and he/she will receive half of the money raised through the raffle.

Timko said 100 percent of the money raised will go toward the camp and any money raised over the necessary amount will go to the group's "camp fund" for future camps.

The Young Life group has had two "club nights" so far and Timko said the number of students has doubled from 10 to 20. She said the camp is a positive thing for the youth involved and the students who attend often claim it was the best week/weekend of their lives.

Timko said she is really appreciative of the support the group has received from the community and hopes to see that positive relationship continue.
