Justin Irvin, left, with the Grass Valley Volunteer Fire Department, which is located in Pershing County, stands with Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) Hazardous Materials Manager Jennifer Johnson during an emergency training exercise July 30 in Winnemucca. Irvin said he provided safety feedback on things he observed during the drill, which brought together numerous emergency agencies and first responders to deal with a simulated spill of hazardous material from a UP railcar. Irvin also participated in the decontamination corridor set up during the event. The disaster exercise was coordinated by Union Pacific, which provided a tanker car for the training. The scenario involved a simulated leak of anhydrous ammonia. Railroad officials offered training on how railroad cars work, how to shut off valves, who to contact, etc., in the event of a real emergency.[[In-content Ad]]
