WINNEMUCCA - After helping her volleyball team to being one match away from the state tournament this past fall, Lowry High School senior Betsy Guerrero is heading to Susanville, Calif., to play volleyball for Lassen Community College.
"I looked at Lassen and thought they could push me to get better," said Guerrero. "I liked the coaches and was able to meet one of the players."
Guerrero led the Lady Bucks in kills this season with 56 and was third on the squad in blocks with 24. Twenty of those blocks were solo.
Lowry went 19-10 overall and 9-1 in the Ruby Mountain League before losing to Churchill County in one of the three Northern 3A regional tournament pods.
"It is a very nice accomplishment and nice thing for her," said LHS head coach Bob Rice. "She is very deserving of this and is a hard worker and has improved her game. I had her for just one year but it was a good experience."
Guerrero was a first-team selection in the Ruby Mountain League in 2010 and accomplished that feat once again in 2011. In addition, she was chosen to the first-team, all-state squad this fall, and was the only Lowry player chosen to the all-state team. The senior also played three years on the girls basketball team and was part of the 2010 state championship team.
"I am going to work out this summer and look to get stronger and better before the school year starts," Guerrero added.
Guerrero added she may study business at the two-year school.
Lassen is part of the Golden Valley Conference along with Feather River College (Quincy, Calif.), Butte College (Oroville, Calif.), College of the Redwoods (Eureka, Calif.), Shasta College (Redding, Calif.) and College of the Siskiyous (Weed, Calif.).
The Cougars are coached by Glen Yonan and were 2-8 in league play and 2-14 overall a season ago. The roster from this past fall included five Nevada players, with the rest from California.
"Lassen is getting a very good girl and she will be a good asset for them," Rice said. "It is a good place for her to start and could be a good stepping stone for her future. It will be nice that she is close to home, I will be able to get a chance to watch her play."
