The MTC (Mine Training Cooperative) scholarship provides $5,000 to students at Great Basin College who are interested in earning a certificate or associates degree in diesel, electrical systems, industrial millwright, instrumentation or welding.
There are between 10 and 14 scholarships available, but only four were given to students last year. Lowry counselor Todd Milton would like to change that, and have all the available scholarships given out. The scholarship is supported by Barrick Goldstrike Mines, Newmont Gold Company and Sandvik.
The school is hosting an information event on the scholarship on Thursday, Nov. 13 at 6:30 p.m.
The scholarship includes an internship at a local mine, in addition to the $5,000, which pays for almost the entirety of the program said Milton. A student will work at a mine during the summer and also on the weekend during the school year.
The internship and classes allow the student to learn a very marketable trade, and will graduate with skills, training and practical experience. The employability of such a person is much more than one with solely a high school diploma said Milton.[[In-content Ad]]
