Grant-funded shooting range upgrades complete

The volunteer committee that runs Humboldt County's shooting park recently completed upgrades to the education building that were made possible by a grant from the Friends of the National Rifle Association.

They marked the occasion with the presentation of a plaque expressing their gratitude.

A $28,000 NRA Foundation Grant was used to upgrade the existing solar-based electrical system for the education building, (the site does not have electric utility service).

Light fixtures were upgraded using brighter LED bulbs. A new camera security system was added in and around the education building. A generator/welder was purchased to augment the existing system. This allows conversion to "backup" electrical supply if the solar-charged system fails or is weak. The welder may be used to fabricate and repair metal fixtures and targets.

Better lights and consistent power have improved the classroom facility and it's being used by more groups for education and training. Use of the Education Building is coordinated through the Nevada Department of Wildlife Office in Winnemucca.

Last year, over 1,000 adults and youth participated in educational and training programs using the park's education building. Users include: NDOW hunter education classes, concealed carry classes, 4-H meetings and events, local law enforcement training and other local and regional groups.

The education building is only a part of the facilities available for public use at the Shooting Park. Shooting areas available at the range include: a 100-yard shooting bay with canopy-covered benches, a 400-yard shooting bay with canopy-covered benches, two 50-yard handgun and rimfire bays, three shotgun areas with clay target throwers (one is canopy covered) and an archery range.

Amenities include a picnic area and restroom. The facility is one of the most used recreational areas around Winnemucca. A car counter was placed at the entrance for a month last fall. The counter averaged 49 vehicles a day for a month. Commonly there are one to four occupants per vehicle.[[In-content Ad]]
