BATTLE MOUNTAIN - For 24 students living in Battle Mountain, the finish line is in sight. In a few short weeks, they will be graduating from Great Basin College with degrees ranging from Certificate of Achievement in Industrial Millwright Technology to Bachelor of Science degrees in Nursing.
"I am extremely proud of the students who will graduate. Many of them have faced challenges along the way and have had to balance school with family and work commitments. This is a major accomplishment," said Ami Rogers, coordinator of the Battle Mountain Center.
Rogers and the Student Government Association senator for Battle Mountain, Danielle Powell, have been planning a celebration to honor local graduates.
The Battle Mountain Center and the SGA will host a Party in the Park on May 17 at the Lions Park from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. The graduation celebration includes a barbecue and live music. Graduates will be receiving invitations in the mail and must RSVP by noon on May 11 in order to receive their meal tickets. Additional meal tickets for guests will be available for purchase at the Battle Mountain Center while supplies last.
The general public is invited to join the festivities at 7:30 p.m. when Rogers and Powell will introduce the graduates and recognize their special achievements. The local band Pushing Back, fronted by GBC student Kyla Bright, will then take the stage, providing live music for the rest of the evening. Bring your favorite lawn chair or blanket! This is an alcohol-free event. It will not be served. Please don't bring it.

Three GBC students selected to receive President's Award
Battle Mountain residents Wilbur Becker, Erin Vandemark and Danielle Powell traveled to Elko on April 13 to attend the Great Basin College President's Award Ceremony. Each year faculty from all of the campuses across GBC's 62,000-square-mile service area nominate students who not only excel academically but also go above and beyond, distinguishing themselves from other students in some way.
Thomas Matula, the Business Department chair, presented Vandemark with a President's Award for her efforts as a student in the Associate of Applied Science, Business Administration program. Vandemark is employed by the Lander County School District. She will be graduating in May with her Certificate of Achievement and Associate of Applied Science degrees in Business Administration.
Wilbur Becker was nominated for and received a President's Award for Outstanding Center Student. Becker is employed at the Battle Mountain Center as an administrative aide. He was nominated because in addition to being an excellent student, he volunteers with his church's youth group, and utilizes the opportunity to put his learning into practice. He is currently serving on an ad hoc committee dedicated to building a community center in Battle Mountain.
Danielle Powell received her President's Award for her dedication to supporting and advocating for students at the Battle Mountain Center in her role as Student Government Association senator. Since being nominated in August 2011, Powell has advocated for students during the tuition and fee increase process and held food and teddy bear drives on campus benefiting local families in need and those touched by domestic violence. Most recently, Powell initiated a Bingo Bash activity that united students from all campuses to socialize and play bingo via interactive video.
All three students were recognized by faculty and their peers during the awards ceremony and were invited to attend a luncheon held in their honor.
