Governor proclaims March 10 - 18 Americorps week Members improve quality of life in Nevada

RENO - Gov. Brian Sandoval has proclaimed March 10 - 18 AmeriCorps week, an opportune time for all Nevadans to salute AmeriCorps members and alums for their service in getting vital work done in communities across Nevada.

"I decided to join AmeriCorps to give back to my community," said Aquelio Vinson, a first-term Luz AmeriCorps member serving at After School All Starts Las Vegas. "It gives me not only the chance to help people and change lives, but shows that anyone can accomplish the dreams they want with a little motivation and commitment. AmeriCorps has definitely been that motivation for me, giving me the opportunity to make a difference in my life."

Hear directly from current and past AmeriCorps members about why they decided to become a member and the impact they feel they are making by visiting Nevada Volunteers' website, blog or Facebook page during AmeriCorps week. "It is inspiring to listen to AmeriCorps members talk about what they do each day to improve our state," said Shawn Lecker-Pomaville, CEO of Nevada Volunteers. "Their passion for service is contagious and reminds me how much Nevada, as a state, gains from each member's national service."

This year 308 AmeriCorps*State members are serving at more than 64 non-profit agencies across the state. These members address critical unmet needs in Nevada while earning a minimum living allowance and an educational award. A total of 42 AmeriCorps VISTA members are helping build the capacity of Nevada's non-profit organizations daily.

AmeriCorps members serve by doing a myriad of activities such as cleaning and improving national, state and local parks, teaching financial and budget classes, helping students learn to read, teaching emergency preparedness classes and many other critical services.

The 2011-12 Nevada Volunteers AmeriCorps grantees include the Children's Cabinet (sponsors 29 AmeriCorps members), Great Basin Institute Nevada Conversation Corps (143), Luz Community Development Coalition (47), Nevada Outdoor School (17), Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation (16) and United Way of Southern Nevada (56).
