SULPHER, Nev. - A hundred years ago people took their visiting very seriously. You cleaned up for it. You dressed up for it.
This is Mary Swager and she's dressed for visiting. She's got her horse hitched to her buggy and her dog, a beautiful golden retriever, ready to go. The dog isn't bothered by the photographer; he just wanted his drive. I suspect he didn't care where he went as long as he was perched next to Mary.
The remarkable thing isn't the dog - it's Mary. How did she keep that apron clean? The water at Sulphur is highly mineralized. Everything washed in it smells of sulphur. It also left stains from the minerals. A few washings and your clothing had a definitely dingy appearance. (My family lived at Sulphur. I have personal experience of that water!) Not Mary! That apron is pristine. It glows off this old photograph. How did she do it?
