Runners and walkers will be donning glow sticks and reflective gear Saturday night for a Glow in the Dark 5K to benefit Relay for Life.
The event, which is still pending Winnemucca City Council approval and is on today's budget, is being organized by the Kaia FIT Relay for Life team. Team captain Amber Gourley said the group had been together for a while and tries to do 5Ks on a regular basis. This will be the first time they have put on the Glow in the Dark run, however, and Gourley said she is expecting a turn out of up to 50 people.
"We thought we would try something different this year," Gourley said.
Although new to Winnemucca, the Glow in the Dark run has been held in other cities and Gourley said the team thought they should give it a try.
The team will be providing glow sticks, glow necklaces and glow bracelets, and Gourley recommends wearing reflective gear and headlamps. The route, which begins and ends at Vesco Park, will be marked with glow in the dark paint and signs.
The race starts at 7:15 p.m.; registration opens at 6:45 p.m. Children 11 and under can participate for free, and adults 12 and up will have a $20 registration fee. Participants with a student ID will receive $5 off of their registration cost. All funds will go toward Relay for Life, Gourley said.
"We encourage the community to come out and support a cause that touches so many people in our community," she said.
Although Relay for Life teams try to raise awareness year-round, this month is particularly important for the Kaia FIT team because it marks colon cancer awareness month, the type of cancer that is the team's focus.
After the run, the next fundraising event the Kaia FIT Relay for Life team has planned is "Bottoms up Bowling," a bowling night at Spare Time Bowl. The cost to participate is $10 and covers shoe rental and two hours of bowling. Spare Time is sponsoring the event, so all money raised will go to Relay for Life. Gourley said the team is also planning some other games, give-aways and raffles for the night.
