WINNEMUCCA - It is that time of year again, yes Girl Scout cookie sales are in full swing. When America thinks of Girl Scouts, they think of one thing: Girl Scout cookies. Every year, millions of cookies are sold all around the world. People wait every year in anticipation to see if there are any new kinds of Girl Scout cookies. These cookies have created frenzy throughout the world that doesn't stop until the last box is sold.

If you're not lucky enough to have co-workers come into the office armed with Girl Scout cookie signup sheets every year, the annual rush to score these tantalizing treats can be frustrating. But don't fret, it's not too late to buy cookies, Girl Scout troops will sell additional cookies at "cookie booths" throughout Winnemucca until March 31.

Within the Girl Scout organization, 2012 is the year of the girl. Girls have big dreams and the Girl Scout Cookie Program helps give girls the skills and ability to make them come true, with the help of boxes of tasty treats and a lot of support from friends, family and community.

So, what can a cookie do? Girl Scout cookies offer that great familiar taste - from the Girl Scout Thin Mint to the Carmel deLite (also popularly known as Samoas) - but they also allow you to help provide funds for the premier leadership program for girls. No other program offers girls so much in developing courage, confidence and character - and it all starts with a box of cookies.

Girl Scout cookies have been an American tradition for more than 90 years - and for good reason. As simple as a cookie is, the snack offers Girl Scouts the funds needed to provide highly touted programming that offers a life-changing experience. The Girl Scout Cookie Program is about more than earning money. Through the program girls learn five essential life skills: Goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics.

Those who don't wish to purchase cookies for their own consumption can still assist Girl Scouts by making a purchase and donating the cookies to troops' Gift of Caring recipients, such as local food pantries and military troops. Remember that it's more than a box of cookies - it's a lasting investment in the community.
