Getting your game tag application in early could win you $1,000

CARSON CITY - The Nevada Department of Wildlife wants to remind sportsmen to get their applications in early for this year's big game draw. Hunters who apply early online will be entered into a drawing to receive a $1,000 gift certificate.

System's Consultants, NDOW's contractor for the big game tag draw process, is sponsoring the early application incentive for the 2013 big game tag draw. The winner will get to pick what store the certificate is to: Cabela's, Scheels or Bass Pro.

NDOW also wants to make sure that hunters are aware of changes to the process to obtain an alternate tag. During the online application process an applicant would affirm their willingness to be an alternate and accept an alternate tag by marking a check-off box on each species they are applying for.

In 2012 over 600 tags were returned to the Department prior to the start of the season. Most of these returned tags were not reissued. The new changes are an effort to give more hunters the opportunity to hunt big game in the Silver State.

This year will also be the first year that NDOW will accept party applications for antlerless elk (cow elk) and horns shorter than ears antelope. In previous years, party applications were only accepted for mule deer.

Applications for the big game draw must be received, either by mail by 5 p.m. or online at www.huntnevada.com, by 11 p.m. on April 15.

Hunters will be officially notified of the draw results by June 10. However, initial tag draw results to be posted online at www.huntnevada.com within 48 hours of the actual draw, which is usually held in late May.
