George Dewey Shier Jr.

George Dewey Shier Jr. passed from this life on June 7, 2014, in Winnemucca, Nev., at the age of 89. Born May 12, 1925, in Chico, Calif., to Ila Boyd and George Dewey Shier Sr. He entered the Marine Corps at the age of 17 during which time he served in World War II and in Korea as a member of the National Guard after which he attended Chico State on the GI Bill. He married Phyllis Harding with whom he had six children and then married Billie Davis Riggan to whom he was married for 51 years at the time of his death. George was an avid reader and history buff as well as an outdoorsman. He helped to mark the Peter Lassen Trail as well as the Fremont Trail. He also enjoyed exploring old mining towns and other sites of historical interest.

George moved to Susanville, Calif., where he lived for a number of years. He worked primarily in the title company business. He then moved to the Winnemucca, Nev., area in 1973 where he opened his own title company. George was active in Kiwanas and served on the Winnemucca City Council. He also served on the Advisory Board and the Volunteer Fire Dept. Pershing County, Grass Valley.

He is survived by his children Ron Riggan, Renee Gomez, Robin Riggan, Craig, Rod and Ken Shier. He is also survived by 27 grandchildren and 44 great grand children. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, his parents, two children Collette and Christina and three grandchildren.

A memorial service with potluck and barbeque will be held at Sonoma Ranch on Grass Valley Rd. on June 21st from noon to 4 pm.
