ELKO - Great Basin College Director of Continuing Education and Community Outreach, Angie De Braga, has been appointed to the Nevada Commission on Minority Affairs. The Legislative Appointment, announced in December by Christina Fuentes of the Department of Business and Industry, begins this month. De Braga was nominated by Great Basin College President Mark A. Curtis.
The Commission on Minority Affairs advocates for minority populations residing in Nevada. The commission makes recommendations on a variety of issues, including education, housing, employment, civil rights, health, political empowerment and economic development.
De Braga has a long history of engagement in education, serving in her position at Great Basin College since 2007. Prior to joining GBC, she was the assistant director of Distance Education at UNR, and Elko community coordinator for the UNR Office of Extended Studies. Previous to her service in education, she managed subsidized housing for economically disadvantaged families and individuals, and senior citizens.
Commenting on the appointment, Curtis praised De Braga's selection. "Angie's background in education and advocacy makes her a smart choice for the Commission. I am confident she will be a strong voice for minority communities in rural Nevada and throughout the state," he said.
De Braga has considerable experience working with minority communities within the GBC service area. She chaired the Great Basin College Native Market effort for two years, helping to provide a means for preserving Native traditions through art, dance and music, as well as providing a venue for entrepreneurship and economic development. She also managed Native American youth college and career projects. She currently sits on the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee for the Nevada System of Higher Education.
De Braga looks forward to being a part of the discussion on minority affairs. "I am interested in assessing resource needs statewide and specifically what resources are available to people in rural Nevada. I hope to be a voice for people who face unique challenges facing those who live in Nevada's smaller communities, many of them far from the major population centers of the state. I'm sure I will learn from this experience, and I encourage anyone who is interested in the work of the commission to contact me." De Braga can be reached at Great Basin College at (775) 753-2231.
The Commission on Minority Affairs meets quarterly. De Braga was sworn in Jan. 22.
Great Basin College is a member institution of the Nevada System of Higher Education and is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. For 40 years GBC has provided opportunities in higher education for rural Nevadans. GBC awards Certificates of Achievement, Associate and select Baccalaureate degrees using a variety of instructional methods.
