GBC to hold wild land fire training

Great Basin College is offering a Wildland Fire Training Academy on May 27 through June 1. All classes meet or exceed the federal standards as outlined by the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG).

The college is actively partnering with local, regional, state and federal agencies including the BLM, Forest Service and municipal fire departments. The goal is to offer local training for current agency personnel, private fire contractors, and individuals seeking first-time employment as firefighters. Classes are scheduled throughout the last week in May following the Memorial Day holiday, and range in duration from 4 hours to 40 hours to prepare participants for the upcoming summer fire season.

The Basic Wildland Fire Training Field Day (for beginners) requires online coursework which must be completed prior to attending the one-day, hands-on field day on May 31. Therefore, those interested in this initial firefighting course should enroll by May 23.

Another course that requires no previous firefighting experience is "Expanded Dispatch Recorder/ROSS (D110) for anyone interested in becoming a fire dispatcher. Computer proficiency for dispatcher training is mandatory.

Wildland Refresher class (RT130) is being offered for fire contractors and others who need the training.  This four-hour class will provide contractors with the required refresher training.  Contractors must have the Basic Wildland Fire Training completed prior to enrolling for the refresher.  Space in all classes is limited, so please register early at www.campusce.net/gbcnv. For more information, call (775) 753-2202 or go to www.gbcnv.edu/firescience.

Great Basin College is a member of the Nevada System of Higher Education. The college is regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.
