BATTLE MOUNTAIN - More than 25 classes will be held June 18 - 28 for Great Basin College's (GBC) first-ever Kid's College for kids ages 6 to 17. The classes will vary in length during that amount of time.
Classes will be held at the GBC Battle Mountain center and range from college prep courses to fun enrichment courses such as Beginning Guitar, Magic 101, Basque Culture, Painting with Primary Colors and Cake Decorating, said GBC Battle Mountain center Coordinator Ami Rogers, who is in charge of the program.
"It gives local kids something fun, educational and engaging to do over the summer," said Rogers. "The goal of the program is to foster early positive college experiences and to promote future attendance."
The teachers will be from the local community and will have knowledge in their special instructional areas, said Rogers.
Registration is ongoing and ends June 1. Rogers encourages parents to sign their kids up soon since space in each class is limited, she said. Parents must go to the Battle Mountain center at 835 N. Second St. to register and payment is due at the time of registration. The fees for the classes vary from $15 to $60. Classes will be taught at the center.
The Kid's College is supported by the Northern Nevada Chapter of the American Red Cross and Newmont Mining. This is the first time for this program to be held and Rogers is hoping to make it an annual event.
