Gas prices tumble down -

Nevada state at $3.78 - 11 cent drop in one month

LAS VEGAS - With Nevada pumps pricing falling daily, the Silver State residents are on a roll and hitting the road during the end of summer travel season, Today's state average price of a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline is $3.78. All metro areas are moving downward with the most significant decrease registering in Sparks, at $3.86, a -$0.14 decrease since AAA last fuel gauge report on July 8.

A survey of 13 gas stations in Winnemucca on Friday, Aug. 15 found a low of $3.63 a gallon and a high of $3.99 a gallon. The average price of gas in town was $3.69, which is 15 cents lower than July's average and 3 cents more than the August 2013 average.

In all Nevada metro areas tracked by AAA, North Las Vegas is registering the state's lowest pump price, with drivers paying an average price of $3.72 per gallon for unleaded regular gas. Reno registers Nevada's highest price, at $3.91 a gallon. The highest price of gas ever recorded in Nevada was in June of 2008, at $4.27 per gallon of unleaded regular.

Hawaii has the highest average price, $4.32. California and Oregon are tied for highest average price, $3.91 in the contiguous states. South Carolina enjoys the lowest average price, $3.18.

"As we approach the end of summer travel, gas prices continue their downward trend," said Cynthia Harris, AAA Nevada spokesperson. "With ample supplies nationwide, and with no immediate threat to the distribution of oil, Nevadans should continue to enjoy relatively lower prices at the pump."

The national average price for regular unleaded gasoline has continued its downward trend despite high-profile conflicts in overseas oil producing countries and declining domestic refinery production. Today's price is $3.47 per gallon, which is $.02 less than one week ago, $0.14 cents less than one month ago and seven cents less than the same date last year.

Despite the geo-political headlines around the globe, oil prices continue to trade near multi-month lows. The price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) settled $0.43 cents higher at $98.08 per barrel at the close of formal trading yesterday, which is slightly lower than the price to begin last week and equal to the lowest settlement to begin a week since the start of February.

To get the best mileage possible, AAA recommends keeping tires at the recommended pressure suggested by the vehicle manufacturer, performing routine maintenance and making sure fluids are clean and belts and hoses are in good repair. The way consumers drive may also have an impact on fuel economy: smooth driving helps avoid sudden stops and starts; combining trips or lightening car loads also helps conserve gasoline.
