LOVELOCK - The Lovelock Frontier Days Committee held its annual recruitment meeting Sept. 6. One new volunteer attended the meeting; Melissa Hughes will work with others on the events subcommittee.

FDC Vice-Chair Darla Barrick named other new members but, due to prior commitments, they were not at the meeting to get their official roles with the committee. FDC Chair Quint Hughes mentioned that the committee still needs more volunteers.

The committee lost four members this year. Melanie Hamilton resigned as FDC treasurer after seven years with the group. Lisa and Chuck Lovin and their daughter Keely Wagner have dedicated themselves to the park set-up and vendor subcommittees for the past five years.

"We appreciate the service Melanie, Chuck, Lisa and Keely have given us over the years," Hughes said.

In new business discussed at the meeting, the committee has set up an email address, lovelockfrontierdays@gmail.com, and will send out as many sponsor and vendor letters as they have email addresses for to cut down on costs. The committee is also finalizing setting up their PayPal account to allow sponsors to donate and vendors to pay for spaces directly online.

"Frontier Days is getting into the 21st century. These are some things that need to be done just to keep us up to date," Hughes said.

Next year marks the 45th Lovelock Frontier Days celebration.

The committee is also looking for submissions from the public for next year's theme and logo. Submissions can be made via the email address or by calling the committee's phone number at 857-9361. Ideas need to be made available to the committee by Sept. 19, as they will be voting on the 2013 theme and logo at their Sept. 20 meeting.

The FDC will also be nominating and voting for new officers at the Sept. 20 meeting. The public is invited to attend the meeting, which will be held at the Pershing County Community Center at 6 p.m., Hughes said.

FDC will do something new for the 2013 Frontier Days Parade. They will be entering their own float.

"I know this will be a little more work on everyone but I think it will encourage more parade participation," Hughes told those in attendance.

The suggestion was met with unanimous approval from the committee members.

"This will give the high school students looking for scholarships another opportunity to get more points toward their Frontier Days scholarships," Barrick said.

Hughes put a challenge out to area businesses for the parade.

"I am putting a friendly challenge out to all local businesses to put a float in the parade," Hughes said.

The group voted to purchase a large rotating trophy for the parade winner of the local business category that can be displayed in their business through out the year.

Friendly competition between businesses is good for business," Hughes added.

FDC is looking for a historian to help with a history of the Lovelock Valley. Ideally, there will be information and items that can be displayed about the history of Lovelock, Hughes said. The committee members considered having a booth next to the FDC headquarters where people could browse and learn of Lovelock's history and the history of the surrounding area. Hughes encouraged anyone who has knowledge of the valley to make comments to the committee members.

To increase their scholarship fund, the FDC taken over the already popular Lovelock Birthday Calendar, renaming it the Lovelock Frontier Days Birthday Calendar. The calendar will be on sale soon at the Lovelock/Pershing County Chamber of Commerce in the Lovelock Depot.

Other fundraisers the group is considering to add to the scholarship fund is an adult Valentine Ball, a carnival, candy sales and car washes.

"There are a lot of good ideas out there but we need help to do them," Hughes said.
