Frontier Community Coalition hosts Cultural Diversity Dinner Fundraiser

WINNEMUCCA - "I have a dream," Pauline Salla began. "I have a dream that every culture in Humboldt, Lander and Pershing counties come together to celebrate their diversity. It is what makes our counties great, the very fabric that knits us together. I have a dream that these cultures will celebrate their diversity at a dinner with authentic foods from their culture along with dance and song."

The board of the Frontier Community Coalition smiled as heads nodded in agreement and Salla continued, "This dinner will encompass all areas of this county and it will raise money for our coalition, whose mission is to build partnerships to support healthy communities. The monies will go to the sustainability of these programs."

On the evening of April 28 at the West Hall of the Winnemucca Convention Center, Salla's dream became a reality. Volunteers from all cultures and all age ranges in the three counties staffed the event. Six booths comprised six of the cultures of Humboldt, Lander and Pershing counties.

The Italian, Basque, Latino/Hispanic, Ft. McDermitt's Native American Tribe and the Western Cultures were represented with food ranging from pasta and enchiladas, to rabbit soup. Western deserts such as cheesecake and carrot cake finished the evening.

All during the night entertainment flowed with singing and dancing from the Western, Basque, Mexican and Native American cultures, along with a multi-cultural "belly dancing" presentation.

The auctions had prizes from trips to original art works and signed works from local authors. Bucket raffles featured local specialties and gift certificates.

"I have never seen this building look so elegant," stated attendee Karla Monroe. "Everybody seems to be having a great time!"

The event was completely sold out to raise over $12,000 for the coalition. According to Frontier Community Coalition Director Jeff Munk, the event was definitely a dream come true!
