BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Frontier Community Coalition awarded Jacob's Well Youth Center (JWYC) a $2,000 grant to advance youth-based substance abuse prevention programs throughout 2013.
Kayla Mauldin, Lander County coordinator for Frontier Community Coalition, said, "I am very proud of what the Frontier Community Coalition has been able to accomplish for the youth in Lander County."
The Life Choices Project supports the mission of both JWYC and Frontier Community Coalition by promoting healthy life choices related to drugs, alcohol, self-respect and relational matters via education, communication/dialogue, simulations, and role-play activities.
The yearlong project includes six three-day programs focusing on different life choice topics. Each week's schedule will consist of an educational presentation, activity and debrief centered around a specific topic.
This year's life choice topics include Teen Dating Violence (February), Alcohol Awareness (April), Safe Prom/Graduation Choices (June), Chewing Tobacco (August), Bullying Prevention (October) and Great American Smokeout (November).
"This is yet another example showing JWYC's commitment to enhancing the lives of our youth in Battle Mountain. With these tools and the growing participation of the youth, we can inspire this community's next generation to make great choices. It is my sincere hope that this will excite our town into showing more support by volunteering and giving generously," stated Jesse Gauthier, president of JWYC.
Many of these topics correlate with national movements. Jacob's Well welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with local groups to further the impact in the Battle Mountain Community.
If you are interested in collaborating with the youth center on any topic, please contact Jessica Arky at (775) 635-8800 or email Jessica@jwyc.org.
