LOVELOCK - The Pershing County Library has friends, Friends of the Library that is. The library auxiliary group has been with the library since it opened in 1970, according to Friends of the Library member Dianne Drake.
"Volunteers keep everything going, especially in small towns," Drake said.
Prior to the library opening in its current location, it was on the ground floor of the Pershing County Courthouse.
When Drake moved to Lovelock in 1977 she found the library to be, "the hub of knowledge, culture, and history," in Lovelock she said.
"Our library is one of the best rural libraries you will find. We have one of the best collections of the history of Nevada here in our library," Drake said.
Shortly after moving to Lovelock Drake became involved with the Friends of the Library (Friends) and was part of the support group that helped build the addition to the library in 1988.
While the Friends provide support for the growth and improvement of the library, one of their major focuses is on the children's programs. They have provided funding for DVDs, chairs, tables and murals in the children's section. Other items they have purchased include the bike rack, bulletin boards, snacks and activities for the Summer Reading Program and the Story Hour.
"Part of the 'El dia de Los Ninos' program comes from Friends to match a grant that our children's librarian , Roberta Johnson, has received," Drake said.
Some of the ways the Friends generate funds for these events and items is through book sales and the Christmas Fair. Next month the Friends are hosting the Books are Fun book fair at the library on Sept. 5 from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The book fair will be held in the library's meeting room.
There will be a wide variety of books from children's story books to New York Times best seller and gift items such as boxed stationary, music collections and early learning products.
Drakes said, there will be over 250 items to choose from and items not at the fair may be ordered. She indicated that funds are needed for expanding the children's section shelving and supplies for Story Hour that starts Sept. 10 and will continue every Tuesday at 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. through the end of school. This program is for children three years old and up.
"We also use funds to bring traveling art exhibits from the Nevada Arts Council for everyone in Love lock to enjoy," Drake said.
"Come join us for a Friends meeting the second Monday of each month and help us expand the world of information here in Lovelock," Drake said.
